New Latin American Development Strategies in a Changing International Economic and Political Context
Date(s): May 21st to 23rd, 2008
Location: Aalborg University, Denmark
Description:
After a shift to neoliberal development strategies in the first Post Cold War period, Latin American
development strategies are now substantially more heterogeneous. Changing international economic
and political dynamics such as the economic rise of China and India, as well as the development
crises in a number of Latin American countries after a decade of neoliberal reforms, are relevant
contextual factors behind this tendency. As a consequence, development strategies have come to
vary widely in Latin America both in terms of economic policy and foreign policy choices. Some
countries have opted for strongly nationalist policies such as the nationalization of energy resources
and strong state intervention in the economy, while others maintain more market-driven approaches,
while an emphasis on socially oriented policies seems to be on the rise across this divide.
Aalborg University is organizing a conference on New Latin American Development Strategies in
a Changing International Economic and Political Context at Aalborg University, Aalborg,
Denmark, from May 21st to 23rd, 2008. The main aim of the conference is to explore the roots of
different national development strategies at the current juncture. In exploring this issue, special
attention will be given to two types of contextual factors. 1. Changing international political and
economic dynamics. 2. Changing domestic political and social dynamics.
We invite the submission of papers from researchers and practitioners with a special interest in
conference themes. Please relate your abstract to one of the following workshops.
Development Strategies and Policies:
This set of workshops looks at different aspects of state strategies. How are changes in the
international context conceived and how do they influence the strategic orientation of states? What
role do regional integration processes and projects play in national development strategies? What
kinds of technology and science strategies are pursued in order to enhance national development.
We invite papers that deal with these issues, addressing: 1. Latin American country cases, also in a
comparative perspective. 2. The role of regional integration in national development in other world
regions.
Workshop 1: The international dimensions of the new development strategies: How do these affect
LA relations with US and the rest of the world
Workshop 2: Regional integration in national development strategies in Latin America and in other
world regions
Workshop 3: Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Strategies in national development
strategies in Latin America
State-Society Relations
This set of workshops looks at the political and social dynamics in which the new development
strategies and policies have emerged and continue to evolve in distinct countries. Under each
workshop theme, we invite papers on 1) state policies and programs, and 2) the interaction and
power relations among state, civil society and international actors influencing economic and social
change.
Workshop 4: Resistance and Social movements
Workshop 5: Community Development and Urban Governance
