Frequently Asked Questions

Grants

What are the types of grants?

LASA provides two types of grants:
1) Regular grants: provides PARTIAL funding for travel-related expenses to Congress participants residing in Latin America or the Caribbean at the time of application (including students);

3) Student grant: Provides PARTIAL funding for students residing outside Latin America and the Caribbean;

Please note that LASA now has a fund specifically designated for the Congress travel of indigenous and Afro-descendant intellectuals.

Who is eligible for a travel grant?

Regular travel grants are for people residing in Latin America and the Caribbean regardless of their country of origin or status (professor or student). Student travel grants are for students residing anywhere except Latin America and the Caribbean.
Grants are awarded for paper presenters only, and not for workshop participants. Requests for travel support to serve as discussant, workshop presenter or session chair (without paper) will not be considered for funding.

Please keep in mind that travel funds are very limited, and that as few as one in three requests can be filled.

Participants who received a travel grant and/or Lecturing Fellowship during any of the past three Congresses (at Las Vegas 2004, San Juan 2006, Montreal 2007) do not qualify for a grant for the 2009 Congress.

Only panel organizers may request travel grants for their paper presenters and only for one presenter in the panel. LASA will discard applications for grants beyond the initial request.

What information do I need to submit to request a travel grant?

You need to submit one of the proposal submission forms with travel funding request (Individual Grant Travel Request  / Panel Grant Travel Request) AND an electronic copy of your Curriculum Vitae (one-page long).  Travel funding requests must be submitted by the proposal submission deadline.

Is the "Justification for Travel Request" on a Session proposal meant to be filled out by the Session organizer, or by the applicant?

Exclusively by the Session organizer.

When will I know about the grant?

Grant applicants will be notified by January 19, 2009. Please do not make inquiries to the Program Office, Track Chairs or Section Chairs regarding the status of funding requests.
