ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR PROGRAMS, OUTREACH, AND DEVELOPMENT

The Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice seeks an Assistant Director for Programs, Outreach, and Development. The Assistant Director will work with the Center’s Director to develop research and teaching programs for the Center. The Center’s approach to human rights and international justice combines academic study, training programs, and applied research. Through the interaction of scholars with practitioners in government agencies, international and non-governmental organizations, and charitable agencies, the Center aims to nurture a new generation of scholars and practitioners who are able to draw upon the strengths of many disciplines, and the wisdom of rigorous ethical training in the attainment of human rights and international justice. Therefore, the Assistant Director must have a strong background in the academic study of a human rights-related area (Ph.D. preferred). Preference will be given to a person with experience in practical human rights work in a governmental or a non-governmental organization.

The Assistant Director will help develop and will coordinate organizational aspects of Center projects, including research initiatives, teaching, and conferences. The Assistant Director will: develop and administer relations between the Center and other academic human rights programs; coordinate links with non-governmental organizations, humanitarian organizations, and policy agencies; and oversee the Center’s outreach to the larger academic world and the public. The Assistant Director will assist the Director with fund-raising, grant-writing, and development initiatives.

This is a full-time position, with benefits. The Assistant Director will report directly to the Director, who is a member of the faculty of Boston College.

Primary responsibilities:
• Work with the Director in developing, planning, and coordinating research programs • Work with Center faculty members in carrying out Center research projects
• Assist Center faculty in planning and conducting the Center’s graduate interdisciplinary seminar and in supervising the work of student Fellows
• Develop and sustain contacts with other university-based human rights centers and non-governmental and human rights organizations
• Coordinate with the Boston College Advancement Office, to identify and pursue sources of funding for Center research projects
• Coordinate the Center’s conferences and on-campus educational programs
• Develop and supervise outreach programs that link the Center’s activities to surrounding public communities, and supervise publicity for the Center
• Work with the Director in developing and implementing a program for visiting scholars
• Work with the Director in developing an Advisory Board for the Center
• Supervise the administrative support staff and student interns of the Center

Minimum Requirements:
• A Ph.D. in a human rights related field preferred
• Significant experience in human rights work with a governmental or non-governmental organization is desirable
• Ability to work independently and to collaborate with a team of scholars and human rights activists
• Strong writing skills, appropriate for drafting and editing articles, reports, etc.
• Second language fluency desirable
