Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Art History, Latin American Art

The Division of Art History, Meadows School of the Arts at SMU, invites applications at all ranks for a scholar specializing in the visual culture of Latin America, including any period from Colonial to contemporary. The successful candidate will participate in an expanding program of research and teaching at SMU that builds on institutional strengths in the study of Spanish, Pre-Columbian, and Latin American cultures. In collaboration with colleagues in the Pre-Columbian and Iberian specializations within the Division of Art History, s/he will participate actively in shaping the future of research, curriculum, and pedagogy in a vibrant undergraduate and graduate art history program. The candidate will develop courses for undergraduate and graduate students, from general surveys to focused research seminars; mentor students at all levels; supervise MA theses; and contribute to the overall vitality of the university through engagement in the Iberian and Latin American Studies program and other interdisciplinary programs within the Meadows School of the Arts and across campus.

Faculty in the Division of Art History receive leaves, as well as research and travel support. In general the teaching load is 2/2.

Minimum Requirements:
PhD required, although advanced ABD candidates may be considered. Preference will be given to those scholars with demonstrated excellence in teaching and publications, as appropriate to their experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary, strong visual analytic skills, theoretical fluency, and a broad knowledge of Latin American visual culture and its intersections with adjacent artistic traditions, such as those of Spain, Africa, and the indigenous Americas. We invite applications from scholars in a variety of disciplines, including art and architectural history, cultural studies, Latin American and Chicano/a studies, performance studies, women’s and gender studies, and other related fields, and we encourage candidates whose teaching would engage the resources and programs of area cultural institutions, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Latino Cultural Center, and particularly SMU’s Meadows Museum, with its important holdings of Spanish and Latin American art.
