Where is the Congress going to be held?

The XXX International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association will be held in San Francisco, California.

When is the Congress?

The Congress will be held from May 23 - 26, 2012.

Does LASA2012 have a theme?

Yes, the theme is "Toward a Third Century of Independence in Latin America." All related information can be found on our website at http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/eng/congress/

I am interested in participating in the 2012 Congress. What options do I have?

At this time, individuals can only participate as congress attendees. Additionally, individuals can attend the Film Festival which will be located in the Marriott hotel’s Yerba Buena Ballroom Bob Hill D and C and, the Book Exhibit which will be located in the Marriott hotel’s Salon 9-8.

Where and when can I register?

Pre-registration has closed. If presenters did not pre-register, their names will not appear in the Program Book nor be official participants. The LASA Registration area will be open for badge and program collection, as well as, on-site registration starting on Wednesday from 1 pm to 10 pm, Thursday from 7 am to 8 pm, Friday from 7 am to 8 pm and, Saturday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. What will my registration fee cover?

Each registration fee covers:

  • Admittance to all sessions and book exhibits
  • Admittance to the Welcoming Reception at the Jewish Museum
  • Admittance to the Film Festival
  • Admittance to the Gran Baile
  • Program Book (if program book is lost, an additional can be purchased for $20)
  • Online Conference Proceedings

When will I receive the Congress materials?

LASA will send name badges by mail to all pre-registered participants. You must bring your badge with you to the Congress to receive the Congress Program.

Will there be one-day passes available?

There will not be any one-day passes available.

Will there be child care provided at the LASA2012 Congress?

No child care will be provided at this Congress. LASA will subsidize the cost of child care for accepted participants who are taking their children to San Francisco. LASA will provide reimbursements at the rate of US $10.00 per hour for one child, and US $12.00 for two or more children, for a maximum of 10 hours.

LASA maximum responsibility per family will be $ 100.00 for one child and $120 for two or more children. A parent who bills LASA for childcare must be a 2012 member of the Association and a registered attendee of LASA2012. To receive reimbursement, the parent must submit the original bill from the caregiver, with the name(s) of the child(ren), and the dates of the service, to the LASA Secretariat on or before July 15, 2012.

What are the official languages of the Congress?

English, Spanish or Portuguese are the official languages of the Congress.

What Hotels have special rates for attendees?

The San Francisco Marriott Marquis and the Intercontinental San Francisco are both offering a LASA special rate of $165.00 plus tax. For more information, please click on the link: http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/eng/congress/accommodations.asp.

Additionally, there are two overflow hotels available which are offering a LASA special rate.

  1. Holiday Inn Golden Gateway with a rate of $125.00 plus tax. This hotel is located about a ten minute bus ride from Congress Hotel. LASA will provide a 3-day transportation ticket upon your registration at the hotel. Reservation/Group code: S9S
  2. The Mosser Hotel with a rate of $143.00 plus tax. This hotel is located across the street from the Congress Hotel. Reservation/Group code: LASA meeting

What is a Program Track?

Program tracks are the thematic areas in which papers are submitted and in which panels are grouped.
