Frequently Asked Questions
Participation
I would like to submit a proposal; however, I am not a current member of LASA. Do I need to be a member in order to submit a proposal?
Any interested individual may participate in the Congress. Even though LASA membership is not required for participation, consider joining LASA for 2009 since Congress registration fees are lower for LASA members. You may join online or pay by check or credit card using the form you can find at http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/membership_new.asp .
What are the different roles at the Congress?
The different roles are:
- Paper presenter
- Chair
- Workshop participant
- Discussant
Why may I not submit more than one paper proposal?
LASA's policy is to allow as many participants as possible to present at the Congress, so LASA must limit the number of roles each participant can have.
Can I present one paper but co-author a second paper for which I would not present?
No. Co-authorship of a paper counts as a paper presentation. Therefore, you would not be able to submit a proposal as main author and a second one as co-author.
If I am permitted to present only one paper, may I still do something else?
Yes. In most cases there is a maximum of two "active roles". However, a participant who already has two active roles may be permitted a third active role in a Section Session as chair, discussant, or workshop participant. Again, in no case may an individual present more than one paper at the Congress.
Note 1) Organizer is not considered an active role. Individuals may organize and/or co-organize as many Sessions as they wish without having these count toward active roles. Organizers are not required to play any role in the Sessions they organize or co-organize.
Note 2) If a panel chair presents a paper in her/his own panel, this combination of chair/paper presenter is considered only one active role.
Note 3) Co-authorship of a paper counts as the sole paper presentation permitted.
Here is an exhaustive list of the permitted combinations of active roles (see Section roles in a subsequent part of this document):
