Frequently Asked Questions
Panels and Workshops

What do I need to do to organize a panel?

A panel must have at least three paper presenters (besides chair and discussant) willing to participate in your panel. Potential organizers should begin by contacting colleagues in their area of interest.

I would like the two panels I submitted to be held in the same room, one after the other. How do I make a request of this kind?

Please send two proposals (part I and part II) in the same e-mail message. Session titles should be the same for both panels indicating the program order (part I or part II).

What information do I need to provide with my Session proposal?

Submit the title of the Session and the title of each presentation including a general abstract for the Session. Abstracts for every paper in the Session also should be submitted. Provide complete contact information for each proposer.

How do I know if I should submit a workshop or a panel?

Workshops provide a way for several individuals to exchange information. If Session participants do not intend to present papers, a workshop is the appropriate type of Session.

Does LASA have a preference for either a panel or a workshop?

No.

Are workshop participants eligible for travel grants?

No. Only paper presenters are awarded travel funding.

If two people are sharing a paper presentation, should they be listed as separate presenters or as co-authors, or both?

Indicate the names of both in the proposal submission form.  They should be listed as co-authors.

I would like to add someone to my panel who recently submitted an individual proposal. May we simply add a note to our panel proposal asking LASA to disregard her/his earlier submission, and that s/he will participate on our panel instead?

Please include the new participant on your panel proposal. The individual needs to send LASA a note indicating that we should disregard the earlier individual proposal.

How long are the Sessions?

One hour forty-five minutes. Paper presenters as well as workshop participants should plan on 12-15 minutes each.

Instructions state that panel proposals should include a minimum of four papers and a maximum of six. Currently, I only have only three papers in the panel. May I submit a proposal with three papers and have LASA add papers to the panel?

Proposals may be submitted with a minimum of three papers and if the panel is approved, the Program Committee will add more related papers.
