CSS 8170: El mundo popular chileno, 1968 - presente: Urban Popular Subjects in Revolution, Dictatorship and Democracy

R, this panel will explore connections across five decades of activism and community organizing in Chilean poblaciones. Each author engages questions of identity construction, participation in political projects, and strategies of mobilization. In seeking connections across divergent periods of Chilean history, we ask what is the relevance of earlier experiences of poder popular in the 1970s and mass protests in the 1980s for identity and mobilization within poblaciones today?

FIL 8533: Topics in Early Latin American Sound Film

This panel will take place on Thursday, May 24 between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. in Pacific Suite I. Organized and chaired by Nicolas Poppe (Ball State University), the panel will have Matthew Karush (George Mason University) as its discussant. As not so subtly indicated in the title, this panel will explore different aspects of early Latin American sound film, particularly that of Argentina.

GEN 7609: De lo privado a lo público:  Género y cultura femenina en el siglo XIX

El Jueves 24 de Mayo, de 4:30 pm a 6:15 pm, tendrá lugar este panel sobre lo privado y lo público, organizado por Ana Peluffo (University of California-Davis), quien además oficiará de comentarista. Se encuentra en el programa LASA bajo Session #7609 (GEN).

En este panel, se presentan dos trabajos relacionados con Argentina: Regina A. Root (The College of William and Mary), con su ponencia titulada Private Manners and Public Disruptions: Self-Fashioning, Freedom, and the Fashion Press in Postcolonial Argentina; y Sarah T. Moody (University of Alabama) expone Who's Your Daddy: Orphanhood and Identity in Lucía Miranda (1860) by Eduarda Mansilla.

LTC 8555: Post-Crisis: A Decade After

On Thursday, May 24th between 6:30 pm and 8:15 pm this panel will explore multiple shifts in the field of literary and cultural production in post-2001 Argentina. Literary initiatives such as Eloísa Cartonera, public reading programs such as Letra and Conabib, among many, shape the poetics of contemporary Argentine writers. Our panel interrogates such cultural interventions, transgressions and mutual influences. It also tries to frame the emancipatory promise of social and literary practices as a result of the reconfiguration of the literary and cultural field in times of postautonomy.

CSS 8304:  Responses to Neoliberal State Formations: Fragmentation, Disorder, and Collective Action

On Friday between 10:30 am - 12:15 pm this panel is the first of a double panel formed by fellows of the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) Grassroots Fellowship.  It will explore how specific communities respond to fragmentation and disorder in neoliberal state formations.  This panel is chaired by Kevin Healy (IAF) and the discussant is Elizabeth Cartwright (Idaho State University).

The panel has the following presentations on Chile and Argentina:  Jelena Radovic Fanta (UC Riverside) "Seasonal Labor, Neoliberalism, and Labor Fragmentation: Making Do in Chile's Aconcagua Valley"; and  Meghan Kraush (University of Minnesota) "From Marginalization to Utopianism in Post-2001 Buenos Aires.

Other presentations in the panel are by Joseph Wiltberger (UNC-Chapel Hill) "Toward a New Framework for Migration and Development in El Salvador"; Ellen Sharp (UC Berkeley) "The Battle over Alcohol: Grassroots Justice versus the Guatemalan State"; and Rebecca Dirksen ( UC Los Angeles) "Contemporary Haitian Music as an Organizational Tool of Survival."  

 LTC 8479: Panel on National and Ethnic Constructions by Germanic Intellectuals in the Southern Cone (1880-1913)

LST 7857 Panel sobre poesía contemporánea

El sábado 26 de Mayo, entre las 8:30 am y 10:15 am, tendrá lugar el panel titulado "Activismos y voces: poesía contemporánea en América Latina."  El panel será presidido por Jill Kuhnheim (University of Kansas) y Enrique Yepes (Bowdoin College). Se encuentra en el programa bajo Session #7857, Track Code LST.

En este panel, varias ponencias abordarán producciones poéticas del Cono Sur latinoamericano: Francine  Masiello (University of California, Berkeley) presentará sobre "El cuerpo de la voz: desde Leónidas Lamborghini a los nuevos payadores de la generación del 90," a partir del contexto literario argentino; y Jill  Kuhnheim (University of Kansas) incluirá la poesía de Clemente Padín (Uruguay) dentro de su ponencia, la que se titula "Haciendo la poesía: Clemente Padín y Roxana Crisólogo." Otras dos ponencias se centrarán en la producción literaria mapuche contemporánea: Luis E. Cárcamo-Huechante (The University of Texas atAustin) presentará su trabajo "Ta iñ dungun: los sonidos de la poesía mapuche contemporánea"; y Grínor Rojo (Universidad de Chile) expondrá sobre "Poesía de mujeres mapuche: 2011."

A su vez, ampliando este diálogo sobre la producción poética contemporánea en AméricaLatina, Enrique Yepes(Bowdoin College) analizará la dimension ecologista y ética de la poesía de Homero Aridjis.

LSN 8093: Revoluciones latinoamericanas: miradas locales y extranjeras 

El Sábado 26 de Mayo, de 10:30 am a 12:15 pm, se realizará este panel sobre revoluciones latinoamericanas, presidido por Leila Gómez (University of Colorado at Boulder). Se encuentra en el programa LASA bajo Session ID: 8093; Track Code: LSN.

En este panel, se presentan dos ponencias dedicadas a procesos revolucionarios en Argentina: Fernando Degiovanni (Wesleyan University) y Graciela Batticuore (Universidad de Buenos Aires-CONICET) presentan Cuadros de la Revolución: Imágenes de viaje; y también Laura Demaría (University of Maryland, College Park) con la ponencia titulada Cuando la revolución es en provincia y viene con tonada: el Cordobazo y el "colonialismo interno."

Pensar el orden post-independentista; Ann De León (University of Alberta), Humboldt and Boas in Mexico: Scientific Travel Writing, Archaeology, Anthropology and the Construction of Pre and Post-Revolutionary Mexican Identity; y Luis Hernán Castañeda, (Middlebury College), La huella de la revolución cubana en Historia de Mayta (1984), de Mario Vargas Llosa. Sara Castro-Klarén (Johns Hopkins University) comentará las ponencias.
