LASA's statement on the elections

The presidential campaign and election in the United States were drawn along ethnic, racial, and national boundaries to an unprecedented degree and included vicious attacks on immigrants, women, people of color and religious freedom. The Latin American Studies Association is an international organization committed to transnational research and collaboration across the Americas and beyond which affirms in the strongest terms possible the principles of academic freedom and protection from prejudice, hate and bigotry. LASA has championed the values of mutual respect, free speech and ethnic, racial and international diversity and inclusion for fifty years. In a moment when securing U.S. borders has been cast as a national imperative and migration has been described as a threat to national security, we pledge to defend the vulnerable who have been targeted in this election, and continue our mission of advocacy for the protection of human rights and civil liberties across the Americas.
